The end of term was celebrated as usual with the annual Senior Christmas Carol Concert at Trinity Church in Sutton.
Homefield puts its own unique spin on this festive event by inviting the boys to create their own melodies. At the start of every Autumn Term, Mr Meyers runs a carol writing competition for boys in Years 7 and 8. The pupils use public domain lyrics gleaned from the internet and put their own personal touch on these or write their own to produce a tuneful melody. The boys always come up with a diverse range of styles and genres and the four chosen songs are then rehearsed by year groups to perform at the Carol Concert.
The boys have been rehearsing very hard since half term in their timetabled year group choir sessions and all their hard work certainly paid off on the night. In addition to the usual classic hymns such as Once in Royal David’s City, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, Angels from the Realms of Glory and O Come All Ye Faithful, the audience were treated to some beautiful instrumental music from the Orchestra, String orchestra, Wind Band and Jazz Band. All of the Year 4 boys performed on their recorders and the Chamber Choir performed a new carol in three parts written by Mr Meyers called ‘A Bed of Straw’. The music was interspersed with festive readings by boys from each year group who read Christmas texts by current pupils and famous authors.
Well done to everyone who took part and a very Merry Christmas to you all from Homefield.
