The U10 rugby boys got the season off to an excellent start as they went undefeated in three fixtures against The Mall School. Homefield’s season opening opponents always provide a stern test and this year was no different as they arrived with some very large and physical players. In the end, it was in fact Homefield’s own spirited physicality and no shortage of skill which shone through to record two draws and a win.
The A team led from the front, imposing themselves on the opposition right from the kick-off and dictating long periods of play. Tom H was the first to get his name on the scoresheet, scoring an excellent try after some good rucking and passing allowed him to use his pace and outstrip The Mall’s defence. Homefield continued to demonstrate good continuity play with strong running and support play from Hasan, Kwaku and Rory. This pressure eventually told as Tom H doubled his try tally for the day following some scintillating footwork. Instead of pushing forward to finish the game as a contest, Homefield became guilty of resting on their two try lead, falling asleep just before half-time to allow The Mall to get a score back through a quick tap and pass penalty. This made for an intriguing second half for the supporters and it was pleasing to see Homefield start the second half with more purpose. They were rewarded for their renewed intensity with a hattrick score for Tom H. Those in attendance could have been forgiven for thinking that the win was secured for Homefield but it was not to be as a few missed tackles and a loss of form at the ruck area allowed The Mall to score two tries in quick succession and level the scores. This set up a nail-biting finish to the game with Tom H capping a wonderful display with a try-saving tackle in the last play of the game.
The B team game was equally as thrilling and, at times, was more like a Basketball match with play going from end to end at a relentless pace. There was some outstanding attacking rugby from both teams which led to a 6-6 result. Ashton J worked tirelessly at the break down as did Ben C. Tries for Homefield were scored by Harry J, Jack W, Gavin T, Samir M, Abquar K and Alex K. It was fantastic to see so many boys on the scoresheet and if the defence can tighten up then draws like these will no doubt turn into victories.
The C team clinched the spoils for Homefield on the day, coming out on top in a thrilling 11-8 victory. The boys demonstrated excellent commitment and desire and it was a wonderful spectacle for the parents watching from the sidelines. Homefield scored through Ben H (3), Lucas P (3), Micah R, Luca E, Vinicius G, Montgomery C and Zeeshan S. This was a fantastic start to the season and, like the B team, if the boys can improve their defence then the victories will be even more convincing.
