Music and drama

At Homefield, we believe that music and drama are essential parts of the all-round education our boys receive.

Music at Homefield

Music is a vibrant and highly valued part of life at Homefield. From Nursery onwards, boys benefit from regular specialist music lessons, with a strong emphasis on musical literacy, performance and enjoyment. The boys learn how to read music, sing from notation or by rote, play recorders, keyboards and tuned percussion, leading to composing their own music.

Opportunities to perform are extensive and purposeful. Homefield runs 12 weekly ensembles, including choirs and orchestras, with the senior orchestra led by the Director of the Sutton Symphony Orchestra. Boys regularly perform in concerts throughout the year, including the Christmas Concert, Peri Prom concerts, the Year 6 Musical and Prize Giving. Whole-year group singing is a distinctive feature, bringing the school community together in large-scale performances.

Group instrumental programmes begin early, including violin and cello from Year 1, with wind and brass ensembles introduced in Year 3. Around 70 percent of boys also choose to take individual instrumental lessons with our experienced team of visiting music teachers, reflecting the school’s strong musical culture.

Our facilities include a purpose-built music suite with keyboards, drum kit, concert xylophone, glockenspiel, classroom percussion and computers (with Sibelius and Cubase), a fantastically equipped percussion studio plus four instrumental teaching rooms.

Previously Homefield boys have been offered music scholarships at the following schools:

Brighton College City of London City of London Freeman's
Dulwich College King's College Wimbledon Trinity School
Westminster School Whitgift School Eton College

Drama at Homefield

Drama at Homefield builds confidence, creativity and communication skills from an early age. Weekly drama lessons begin in Reception and are taught by a subject specialist who brings depth and expertise to the curriculum. Lessons focus on performance, expression and storytelling, helping boys develop stage presence and self-belief.

Drama extends well beyond the classroom through performances, productions and specialist opportunities. Boys take part in major events such as the Lower School Christmas Show and the Year 6 Musical, as well as regular assemblies and concerts. Love Theatre Arts offers one-to-one acting lessons on site during the school day, enabling boys to work towards Trinity acting qualifications. Speech & Drama Club also runs after-school as part of our extra-curricular provision - further details can be found on our clubs page. Trips, workshops and theatre visits further enrich the drama curriculum, and Homefield’s strong track record of drama scholarships to top senior schools reflects both the quality of teaching and the confidence of our pupils.

Individual Acting Lessons

At Homefield, individual acting lessons are offered on site by Love Theatre Arts and led by a specialist drama teacher. Lessons take place on Mondays and Tuesdays during the school day. “My son discovered his love for music at Homefield. The weekly specialist lessons really nurtured his interest, and now he’s a proud member of the orchestra at his secondary school. It’s done wonders for his confidence and helped him settle in and make new friends.”
