When you enter our Lower School, you’ll find boys that are energetic, excited, kind and proud to be a key part of Homefield Prep. We focus on opportunities to celebrate individual and collaborative success and also where challenge is needed to ensure that every boy feels confident and well-prepared.

We understand how early social, emotional and academic development is fundamental in forming positive learning attitudes and behaviours. Learning is not passive, but a partnership. As a cohesive team that works closely with specialist teachers across the school, we reach beyond academic achievement to create an environment of enriched opportunity; holding sports, music and languages in equal esteem.

We recognise that the world needs creative problem solvers, and so we provide a broad curriculum which encourages curiosity, critical thinking and opportunity to step beyond comfort zones. We aim to give our boys a rich, broad offer which enables them to make discerning choices when they are ready to start their learning journey across sports, arts, academia, or otherwise.

We are dedicated to ensuring academic progression and that your son has the independence, resilience, empathy and courage to succeed. He will learn with peers who celebrate achievement and work collaboratively to overcome challenge. Our Senior boys take pride in their role as mentors to the Lower School and we are proud of our generous ratio of teachers to students that continues throughout the school.

We believe that the limited days of early childhood should be the most memorable of times and through our offer at Homefield Prep, we strive to create experiences that the boys carry with them, long after they leave our school.

Reception

We deliver outstanding educational provision and in Reception we work in close partnership with our community to ensure we create the very best learning environment. By the time the boys move on to Year 1 they have developed in confidence and are well prepared for the next stage of their educational journey. We were rated as 'excellent' in every area by ISI during their last inspection.

Our boys benefit from specialist lessons in Sport, Music and French and have access to all areas of the main school, whilst also having a special section of the school to call their own. This provides a very special offer to the boys with access and coaching beyond regular EYFS provision. We look at all learning environments, indoor and outdoor, as opportunities to explore learning as we believe that contact with the wider environment expands the boys' imagination, deepens their curiosity and encourages their motivation to learn.

We have some very impressive outcomes. Boys exceed expectations in a broad array of subjects (100% reaching national Early Learning Goals) including Health and Self Care, Technology; Reading, People and Communities, the World and Exploring and Using Media and Materials. Nationally, Literacy and Mathematics remain the subjects in which fewest boys achieve the expected level or higher, however by the end of Reception at Homefield Prep is very different where 100% of our boys achieved the expected level or higher in both areas.

We also offer a concise phonics programme that ensures all boys make rapid progression with their reading. We make learning fun.

For boys joining us, we offer a series of 'Getting to Know Us' settling in sessions which have been a huge success. One of our parents told us how much her and her son enjoyed these sessions:

"Our son had a fantastic time and could not stop talking to his family about how much he enjoyed Zumba dancing and playing outside. He is so excited to start school in September. Thank you so much for organising these sessions. We really appreciate the warm friendly atmosphere you created for us and for spending quality time with us. Special thanks for the yummy treats and the lovely gifts for the boys. Absolutely thrilled to be part of the Homefield family!"

Years 1 & 2

In Year 1 & 2, we build on the outstanding start that the boys receive in their Reception year. Our well-orchestrated curriculum allows for the integration of academic, physical and social skills and we aim to develop independence both in the boys' learning and in their overall school life.

There is a very strong pastoral ethos that aligns with the values of our Senior school. Through our support of many charities we aim to deepen the boys’ insight into the world around them.

Our Year 1 and 2 boys have specialist lessons in Sport, Music, French and Computing. Our curriculum aims to capture the boys’ imagination and engage them as active participants in the learning process. There are a wide variety of enrichment activities and also educational trips that support the boys' learning (for example: Year 1 - Hever Castle, and Year 2 - Gatton Park). Many boys begin to play individual instruments during the Lower School years and this is celebrated and built on as they enter the senior school. Our boys take part in two musical performances each year.
